Me

Who Am I ?

My name is John Murphy. I currently live in Brooklyn and work as a senior software engineer at a clearing firm in Manhattan. If you would like to know more about my professional and educational background, please see my LinkedIn. If you would like to see the extraprofessional code I've written, please see my GitHub.

I love and study music, and the vast majority of my time outside work is spent writing, playing, and practicing. I also enjoy exercising, mainly lifting weights and rock climbing, as well as going to museums, installations and concerts.

Hardware

I have several computers:

Software

I prefer using GNU/Linux for computing, as I both have a desire to study and modify the software I use, as well as script away daily, repetitve tasks. I don't play games, so the only current use I have for Windows at the moment is for running Microsoft Teams and Renoise.

This Website

The goal of this website is to be a central repository for data that's important to my life, and slowly accrete information over time. Even though this website has blog-style updates and posts, I prefer to think of it as a living document I can come back to and update as required ; the closest analog is Gwern's site , though I attempt to have more of an emphasis on taxonomy and grouping of personal data than longform scholarly articles.

In no particular order, the main inspirations for this website are:

I take the majority of my inspiration from Mr. Kaufman, as he uses the bare minimum of styling to communicate effectively. The code I use for generation is a direct descendant of his webscripts.

Software

I want this website to be exensible and scriptable, so I intentionally used a minimal technology stack to ensure the code will continue to build in the future and data types can be easily added as they are identified. Where applicable, I use Free Software as a bulwark against corporate creep and breaking version changes, though there are plenty of non-Free APIs in use.

I've set up the project with an MIT License so that if you desire to learn from and/or copy the code, you are free to do so. I hope it is useful and easy to understand.
